Barn, County Road 29 We've all been to restaurants, right? They undoubtably leave some kind of impression on us - and we pass along something about the food, service and/or atmosphere to anyone that asks. To get all three just perfect for every single personality that graces the establishment is extremely difficult, if not impossible. Thank goodness I'm only responsible for one of these areas. Just the atmosphere alone has so many layers and communicates volumes about the brand - the space layout, the materials on every single surface, what you walk on, sit on, eat & drink with, listen to while your dining, how the staff is outfitted, is the menu readable for an 18 and a 74 year old, the weight of the fork even says something. This kind of detail would drive some people mad but I love it!
One of the details, that is usually left to last or not planned for at all - is what hangs on the walls. Of course as a photographer this is prime real estate and as a designer, visually, it's the cherry on top. Planning for this in a commercial space needs to speak to the brand, what's the mood and message? Morgan's On Main is in Woodland, California an agricultural community since it's founding. With the restaurant being surrounded by fields and farms the menu was created to reflect this heritage, sourcing local, and continuing its long history of farm to fork. This was my cue for what would be the permanent art installation, pay homage to this beautiful, fertile land that is Yolo County.
